Villetta Nonna Giovanna
Marsala & around
Marsala has that charm that only a place with a thousand-year history can have. The city was founded by the Phoenicians, prospered under the Romans, declined during the reign of Justinian and recovered thanks to the Arabs, who also gave it the name that has come down to us: Mars-Alì (great harbour) for some, Mars-Allah (harbour of Allah) for others. After the Arabs came the Angevins and, finally, the Aragonese. On 11 May 1860, with the landing of Garibaldi and the Thousand, Marsala became the starting point of the unification of Italy. Thanks to centuries of winemaking and a culinary tradition that blends many cultures, Marsala also offers plenty of food and wine itineraries: from marinated raw fish to couscous and the typical ricotta sweets, all accompanied by table and dessert wines that are strictly from Marsala. And it enjoys an ideal position for visiting western Sicily, rich in history (the archaeological parks of Segesta and Selinunte, Erice, the old towns of its cities and villages) and natural treasures (the beaches of Marsala, Trapani and San Vito lo Capo, the Egadi islands and their unspoilt sea, the Stagnone lagoon with its beautiful salt pans). From Marsala, everything is within a few dozen minutes.
Off season, when the villa's pool is closed, is the best time to visit Erice, Segesta, Mozia and the salt pans at your own pace, without the summer heat and crowds.
